            <p id="spar0005">A well-preserved isolated graptolite <italic>Prolinograptus packhami</italic> Rickards and Wright, 1997, well known from Australia, is described for the first time in Europe. The genus has now been recognized in three continents (Australia, Europe and North America). The Australian <italic>P. packhami</italic> occurs in the <italic>Neocucullograptus inexpectatus</italic>/<italic>Neocucullograptus kozlowskii</italic> biozonal interval, while the form from the Mielnik IG-1 core, Poland, appears earlier, in the <italic>Bohemograptus praecornutus</italic> Biozone. <italic>Prolinograptus</italic>, of unclear origin, is one of the least-known genera of the subfamily Linograptinae. <italic>P. packhami</italic>, along with <italic>Neodiversograptus palmeri</italic> and <italic>Prolinograptus orangensis</italic>, form a group of very diminutive specimens, with slender stipes and thecal apertures showing varying degrees of eversion. Scanning electron microscope examination revealed the presence of some micro-ornamentation on the rhabdosome surface of the Polish <italic>Prolinograptus</italic>, similar to that known in retiolitids (Retiolitidae).</p>

Le genre <italic>Prolinograptus</italic> est connu sur trois continents (Australie, Europe et Amérique du Nord). L’espèce australienne <italic>P. packhami</italic> est présente dans l’intervalle comprenant les biozones à <italic>Neocucullograptus inexpectatus</italic> et <italic>Neocucullograptus kozlowskii</italic>, alors que la forme du forage polonais apparaît dans la biozone à <italic>Bohemograptus praecornutus</italic>. <italic>Prolinograptus</italic>, d’origine inconnue, est l’un des genres les moins connus dans la sous-famille des Linograptinae. <italic>P. packhami</italic> forme, avec <italic>Neodiversograptus palmeri</italic> et <italic>Prolinograptus orangensis</italic>, un groupe d’espèces de petite taille, avec des rhabdosomes grêles et des ouvertures des thèques présentant des degrés variables d’éversion.          <label>1</label>
         <title id="sect0025">Introduction</title>
         <p id="par0005">
            <italic>Prolinograptus</italic> is the least-known of the older genera of the subfamily Linograptinae. The type species, <italic>Prolinograptus packhami</italic>, was first described by <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright (1997)</xref>. The type species and <italic>Prolinograptus orangensis</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Rickards, Packham, Wright and Williamson 1995</xref> (renamed from <italic>Linograptus orangensis</italic> by <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright, 1997</xref>) were considered endemic Australian forms, known from New South Wales (<xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright, 1997</xref> and <xref rid="bib0095" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright, 1999</xref>) (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>). <italic>P. packhami</italic>, described in this paper, is recorded in Baltica (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>) for the first time. The specimens from the Mielnik IG-1 core are assigned to <italic>P. packhami</italic> on the basis of distinctive features recognized only for this species, such as the remarkably slender rhabdosome and everted, thick-rimmed thecal apertures. At present, it is the second verified occurrence of the species in the world. The current paper presents also for the first time detailed images of <italic>P. packhami</italic> from the scanning electron microscope (SEM).</p>
         <p id="par0010">Specimens similar to the genus <italic>Prolinograptus</italic> were described by <xref rid="bib0135" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek (1958)</xref>, from erratic boulders of Poland. The material comes probably from the Lower Ludlow and consists of a few fragmented rhabdosomes with no siculae (<xref rid="bib0135" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1958</xref>, fig. 58). The specimens display straight, long and very thin thecae, as in <italic>P. packhami</italic>, but in contrast to the latter, their rhabdosomes are slightly dorsally curved. Urbanek's material was assigned to the genus <italic>Pristiograptus</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0030" ref-type="bibr">Jaekel, 1889</xref>. Because the preservation is so poor, a clear identification has been impossible.</p>
         <p id="par0015">In 2004, five incomplete specimens from the Arctic Islands (Canada) (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>), described by Lenz and Kozłowska-Dawidziuk, were thought to belong to the species <italic>P. packhami</italic>, but because of lack of siculae, the Arctic material was not definitely identified. The authors of the present work suggest a transfer of the material to <italic>P. orangensis</italic>. It is supported by the lack of a thick thecal apertural rim (see Pl. 2: figs. 1–7, p. 53 from <xref rid="bib0070" ref-type="bibr">Lenz and Kozłowska-Dawidziuk, 2004</xref>) and the fact that it was found in the Lower Ludlow.</p>
      </sec>
      <sec id="sec0010">
         <label>2</label>
         <title id="sect0030">Origin and phylogeny of linograptids</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0020">Despite extensive and comprehensive research on the origin, phylogeny and astogeny of the linograptids, mostly by <xref rid="bib0015" ref-type="bibr">Jaeger, 1959</xref>, <xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Jaeger, 1960</xref> and <xref rid="bib0025" ref-type="bibr">Jaeger, 1969</xref> and <xref rid="bib0140" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1963</xref>, <xref rid="bib0150" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1970</xref>, <xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1997a</xref> and <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1997b</xref>, the issue of the origin of the linograptids remains unsolved. The ancestor of the Linograptinae probably lived as early as the Late Wenlock (<xref rid="bib0150" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1970</xref>). <italic>Lobograptus? sherrardae</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0100" ref-type="bibr">Sherwin, 1974</xref>, from the <italic>praedeubeli</italic> Biozone, was proposed as the common ancestral species for the three major Ludlow lineages: the Linograptinae, the Cucullograptinae and the Neocucullograptinae (see Fig. 2, p. 30 from <xref rid="bib0170" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek and Teller, 1997</xref>). <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Rickards et al. (1995)</xref> on the other hand remain sceptical about this idea, because there are too many crucial differences between <italic>L.? sherrardae</italic> and <italic>Neodiversograptus nilssoni</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Lapworth, 1876</xref>
               <italic>sensu</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0130" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1954</xref>, considered the earliest known representative of the subfamily Linograptinae.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0025">Although the origin of Linograptinae is not clear, the relationships within three older genera of this subfamily (<italic>Neodiversograptus</italic>, <italic>Linograptus</italic> and <italic>Abiesgraptus</italic>) were exhaustively described by <xref rid="bib0140" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1963</xref> and <xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1997a</xref>. They were all considered chronospecies (<xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1997a</xref>). Temporal species represented by <italic>Neodiversograptus</italic>, <italic>Linograptus</italic> and <italic>Abiesgraptus</italic> display a transformation of the one-stiped monograptid into a multiramous one and replace each other in time.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0030">Describing the species of the subfamily Linograptinae as chronospecies <xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek (1997a)</xref> did not take <italic>P. orangensis</italic> into consideration. He supposed that the Australian species came from the border of <italic>nilssoni- progenitor</italic> or bottom of the scanicus Biozone and represents a stage of development comparable to <italic>N. beklemishevi</italic>. Urbanek's paper of 1997 was actually written in 1995 (<xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1997a</xref>, p. 233), before <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright (1997)</xref> identified <italic>Prolinograptus</italic> and described another species of this genus, the <italic>P. packhami</italic>. Moreover, as shown by <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Rickards et al. (1995)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright (1997)</xref>, <italic>Prolinograptus</italic> overlaps with the range of <italic>Linograptus</italic>, which means they cannot be chronospecies.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0035">Regarding the Australian material, <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright (1997)</xref> suggested a division of the genus <italic>Linograptus</italic> into two groups, both originating probably from <italic>Neodiversograptus</italic> (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>). This means that linograptids would not be a single line of ancestral-descendant succession but at least two different directions of evolution. One group is represented by <italic>Linograptus</italic> and <italic>Neodiversograptus</italic> species, except <italic>Neodiversograptus palmeri</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Rickards, Packham, Wright and Williamson 1995</xref>. This line corresponds to the chronospecies described by <xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek (1997a)</xref>.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0040">These forms evolved increasingly introverted thecae, from straight apertures to the rhabdosomal axis as in <italic>N. nilssoni</italic> (<xref rid="fig0020" ref-type="fig">Fig. 4</xref>), to slightly turned inwards or even strongly introverted thecae as in <italic>Linograptus posthumus introversus</italic> Rickards and Wright, 1997 (<xref rid="fig0020" ref-type="fig">Fig. 4</xref>A, B). The second line is represented by much less examined species: <italic>N. palmeri</italic>, <italic>P. orangensis</italic> and <italic>P. packhami</italic>. This is a group of very diminutive specimens, with slender stipes and thecal apertures everted to varying degrees (<xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright, 1997</xref>) (<xref rid="fig0020" ref-type="fig">Fig. 4</xref>E). We agree with <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright's (1997)</xref> suggestion of the existence of two lineages of linograptids.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0045">Size reduction might have been caused by the continuation of a lilliput effect that followed the <italic>lundgreni</italic> Event (<xref rid="bib0155" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1993</xref>). But in contrast to the most monograptid genera, the <italic>Prolinograptus</italic> retained small and long rhabdosomes. After the crisis it may have had to compete with larger graptolites that spread to more areas. <italic>Prolinograptus</italic> was far less frequent than the other genera of the subfamily Linograptinae. In spite of this, the genus was present in Baltica (Poland), Laurentia (Arctic Canada) and Australia (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>).</p>
         </sec>
      </sec>
      <sec id="sec0015">
         <label>3</label>
         <title id="sect0035">Geological setting and material</title>
         <sec id="sec0020">
            <label>3.1</label>
            <title id="sect0040">Geological setting</title>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0050">Mielnik IG-1, a well-known borehole (<xref rid="fig0010" ref-type="fig">Fig. 2</xref>) is located on the marginal zone of the Podlasie Depression in eastern Poland. It belongs to the East European Platform, Baltica. The Silurian deposits of this area are recorded in numerous boreholes. Within this marginal zone regular llithological changes are observed in the Silurian deposits. They are composed of calcareous sediments typical of shallow waters and, further to the west (Mielnik IG-1 borehole), acquire a mixed character of marly-calcareous sediments and mudstones (e.g. <xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Tomczyk, 1962</xref>, <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Tomczykowa, 1988</xref> and <xref rid="bib0120" ref-type="bibr">Tomczykowa and Tomczyk, 1979</xref>).</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0055">The Silurian section of the Mielnik IG-1 core is 536.5 m thick. The Ludlow sequence is dominated by marly claystones and calcareous claystones (<xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Tomczyk, 1962</xref>). A very rich and well-preserved graptolite fauna from the Mielnik IG-1 core has enabled detailed studies not only of stratigraphic occurrence, but also of the morphology, specialization and phylogeny of Silurian graptolites (<xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Kozłowska-Dawidziuk, 1995</xref>, <xref rid="bib0140" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1963</xref>, <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1966</xref>, <xref rid="bib0150" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1970</xref>, <xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1997a</xref>, <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1997b</xref> and <xref rid="bib0170" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek and Teller, 1997</xref>).</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0060">On the basis of graptolites from this core, <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1966</xref>, <xref rid="bib0150" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1970</xref> and <xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Urbanek, 1997a</xref> designated the Ludlow zones. Ludlow biostratigraphic zones of, particularly, the Arctic Canada (<xref rid="bib0070" ref-type="bibr">Lenz and Kozłowska-Dawidziuk, 2004</xref>), the Czech Republic (<xref rid="bib0105" ref-type="bibr">Štorch, 1995</xref>), the Tien Shan region of central Asia (<xref rid="bib0035" ref-type="bibr">Koren, 1983</xref> and <xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Koren and Suyarkova, 1997</xref>), and Ukraine (<xref rid="bib0125" ref-type="bibr">Tsegelnyuk, 1976</xref>), have provided evidence that most of the graptolites from Mielnik IG-1 core are widely distributed.</p>
            </sec>
         </sec>
         <sec id="sec0025">
            <label>3.2</label>
            <title id="sect0045">Material and methods</title>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0065">The studied material of the <italic>P. packhami</italic> Rickards and Wright, 1997 comes from the Mielnik IG-1 borehole, Poland, Ludlow depth of 915.1 m, <italic>Bohemograptus praecornutus</italic> Biozone. The material consists of about 80 specimens. Investigated material is stored in glycerin in plastic containers, and on SEM stubs in the Institute of Paleobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Warszawa), abbreviated ZPAL G.50/1- ZPAL G.50/13.</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0070">The material was isolated from rock following slow dissolution of the host carbonate in 1–10% HCl. A fine hairbrush was used to transfer specimens. The specimens destined for a detailed examination were bleached in a mixture of potassium chlorate, nitric acid and water. After about a 10–15 h bath, the specimens were washed in water to remove the remnants of acid and chlorine. The isolated specimens were examined under the Philips XL scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the Nikon SMZ 1500 stereomicroscope in the Institute of Paleobiology Polish Academy of Sciences. Photo images of specimens were taken under the Philips XL SEM and with a Nikon D800digital camera.</p>

         <sec>
            <p id="par0135">Description: All the studied fragments are very slender and mostly straight; only two of them display a slightly, ventral curvature (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>D, E). The thecae are 0.15–0.20 mm wide at the aperture and 0.09–0.1 mm at the thinnest portion. Thecae are 1.3–1.5 mm long; the distance between the lips is 1.0–1.2 mm. Thecae number 3.5–4 in 5 mm. Thecal apertures are strongly everted with thick rims (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>E–G). The shape of thecal apertures is characteristic with its large distal indentations (<xref rid="fig0020" ref-type="fig">Fig. 4</xref> and <xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>). Siculae are straight, 0.9–1.15 mm long, with apices reaching 2/3 along the length of the first theca (th<sup>1</sup>). Diameter of the sicular aperture 0.22 mm. One of the siculae has an additional fuselli on the dorsal side of the sicular aperture (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>A–C). The other two siculae do not have dorsal apertural processes or sicular cladium. Virgella directed proximally. The whole thecae are covered with pustular micro-ornamentation that is densely and irregularly spaced (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>C–G). One short fragment of the rhabdosome with an unidentified growth about 0.3 mm long perhaps represents some remnant of a parasite or an abnormally developed thecal aperture (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>G).</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0140">Remarks: Compared with the material described by <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright (1997)</xref> there are differences in stratigraphic occurrence, the size of the sicula, and the large apertural distal indentations (<xref rid="fig0020" ref-type="fig">Fig. 4</xref> and <xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>). The Australian <italic>P. packhami</italic> occurs in the <italic>inexpectus</italic>/<italic>kozlowskii</italic> biozonal interval, while the form from the Mielnik IG-1 core appears earlier, in the <italic>praecornutus</italic> Biozone (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>). The siculae of the Mielnik IG-1 specimens are bigger than the Australian ones. Their minimum length corresponds to the maximum of the Australian siculae. The apertural indentations in <italic>P. packhami</italic> described by <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright (1997)</xref> are only slight, while the Mielnik IG-1 material displays a very clear one (<xref rid="fig0020" ref-type="fig">Fig. 4</xref>E). <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Rickards et al. (1995)</xref> described these indentations as “apertures (…) geniculated above thecal aperture”. No cladia were found in the Mielnik IG-1 material. The micro-ornamentation on the described specimens is recorded for the first time for the monograptids.</p>
         </sec>

         <title id="sect0055">Discussion</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0145">The sicular cladia are one of the most important diagnostic features of the genus <italic>Prolinograptus</italic> and subfamily Linograptinae (<xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright, 1997</xref>), but not every individual in the population must have them; for example, the specimens of <italic>P. packhami</italic> (Rickards and Wright, 1997, Fig. 9K, O, p. 223) or the specimen of <italic>P. orangensis</italic> described by <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Rickards et al. (1995, Fig. 35G, p. 60)</xref> formed at least 15 thecae and no cladium. Only one of the siculae of <italic>Prolinograptus</italic> from Poland has an additional fuselli that might be the beginning of the first cladium (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>A–C). The lack of a well-developed cladium in the Mielnik IG-1 specimens does not question its affinity with <italic>Prolinograptus</italic>. The Polish material presents only a portion of a very rare population of this genus, and that might be the reason why no cladium was found.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0150">According to SEM observations the specimens display numerous pustules, irregularly spaced on the surface of the rhabdosome, including the apertural lips (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref> and <xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>). This is an extraordinary morphological feature for monograptids, which usually have smooth bandages. Until now a similar micro-ornamentation has been known only in retiolitids (Retiolitidae), but unlike <italic>P. packhami</italic> from Poland, the retiolitids usually display a regular spacing of the ornamentation. Two types of micro-ornamentation have been considered one of the most important characters to distinguish the retiolitids into the two subfamilies Retiolitinae and Plectograptinae (<xref rid="bib0010" ref-type="bibr">Bates et al., 2005</xref>, <xref rid="bib0075" ref-type="bibr">Lenz and Kozłowska, 2007</xref> and <xref rid="bib0080" ref-type="bibr">Lenz and Melchin, 1987</xref>).</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0155">Although some of the <italic>P. packhami</italic> described by <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright (1997)</xref> display a gently ventral curvature (i.e. <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright, 1997</xref>, Fig. 9N, p. 223), <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright (1997)</xref> did not say anything about it in the diagnosis of the genus or the species. The Mielnik IG-1 material also contains two slightly, ventrally curved specimens (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>D, E). But because such forms in the population are few, it probably cannot be a diagnostic feature of the species.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0160">Parasitism on graptolites is a rare phenomenon, but when it happens, it may be manifested as outgrowths of periderm (<xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Bates and Loydell, 2000</xref>). Perhaps the growth on one of the examined fragments of <italic>P. packhami</italic> (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>G) is a blister formed as a result of the activities of some parasite. However, because the specimen is fragmentary, accurate identification is difficult.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0165">As one of the major features of this genus, <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright (1997)</xref> mentioned little or no increase in dorso-ventral width throughout the colony. Our material as well as measurements of specimens from Australia (<xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright, 1997</xref>) do not agree with this view. In extreme cases, differences in the width of the thecae reach up to 100% in the Australian material (<xref rid="tbl0005" ref-type="table">Table 1</xref>). Fragmentary material from the Mielnik IG-1 core also displays a distinction among the thecae, but the differences are smaller. This may be because only the proximal and medial thecae are present in the examined material.</p>
         </sec>
      </sec>

         <title id="sect0060">Conclusion</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0170">The present study suggests that <italic>P. packhami</italic> Rickards and Wright, 1997, one of the members of the subfamily Linograptinae, was not geographically restricted to Australia as previously thought (<xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright, 1997</xref> and <xref rid="bib0095" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright, 1999</xref>). Apart from Australia the genus <italic>Prolinograptus</italic> appeared in Poland, Baltica as well as in Arctic Canada, Laurentia (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>).</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0175">These are also new data on the stratigraphic occurrence of <italic>P. packhami</italic>, that show it ranged through at least five zones from the <italic>praecornutus</italic> (present paper) to the <italic>inexpectatus- ozlowskii</italic> Biozones (<xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Rickards and Wright, 1997</xref>). SEM observations of isolated specimens enabled detailed studies on morphology and description of the micro-ornamentation unprecedented in other monograptids.</p>
         </sec>
